Dear all,

I am happy to announce that the applications for "TWL Con (2019 India)"[1],
a mini-conference around The Wikipedia Library (TWL)[2] and library
outreach for Wikimedia projects in India are now open. Due to limited time,
we're not able to spare much time for responses, kindly accept
my apologies. The application period is 19–25 November 2018.

In brief about the event:

TWL helps active editors access reliable sources to improve Wikipedia.
Among several other programs, it also helps knowledge professionals share
their collections with the public. TWLCon (2019 India) is an upcoming
conference to increase awareness about TWL to Wikimedians in India and
discuss strategising TWL activities in India. This event has been primarily
designed to understand the needs and document the insights from experienced
Wikimedians about libraries/sources (references) in India. More about the
event may be referred from the event page.

The application form is at: https://goo.gl/forms/NvwYttEeCFfl30rG3; last
date 25 November 2018.
The event is to be held in the first or second weeks of Jan 2019
(tentative); Venue will be informed later.
The eligibility guidelines are applicable as mentioned here [3].

Kindly let me know if you have further questions.

Thanks

Hello Pavanaja,

Sorry for the confusion. In my first email as well as in the reminder, I
mentioned it as 25 Nov, but I forgot change that on Meta-Wiki.

I have noted on the talk page that this "event" appears to have been set
up without much discussion. I would indeed even question the design of an
event that precludes librarians who are outside the Wikimedia movement
simply by requiring that one has a Wikimedia user name. Maybe Krishna can
help some of us understand the process by which this event has been thought
about?

best wishes

The whole planning seems to be half cooked, e.g. on the conference homepage
it reads:

Venue & City: We're currently searching, let us know know if you have any
good options; economical (free; library preferred), safe, well connected,
easy of connecting with local library/librarian community.

And are we closing applications today? Should we not have a confirmed venue
to begin with? Day before yesterday when I checked the page, even dates
weren't confirm and there were couple of options projected there.

Hi Dhaval,

We are in a conversation with a few institutions, where academics,
librarians and any other related personnel can take part in some
discussions. We will be finalising it by the end of this week, definitely
before notifying the participants.

Yes, applications will close today. We haven't fixed the event dates only
to suit the venue, but to avoid clashes with Hindi WP conference, we fixed
on 4-6 Jan. I made the change
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=TWLCon_%282019_India%29&type=revision&diff=18648338&oldid=18645643>
this morning about the same.

Thanks,

Hi Krishna,

I think the "we" is unclear here. Many of us Wikipedians would have run
into librarians and we might all have networks to tap into for helping an
event such as this. The status is marked as "Initial planning" - it would
seem like that is what it ought to be and you might like to avoid Google
Forms at this stage and ask for more open feedback on the scope itself.
Even the dates could be changed - it would easily have been possible to
choose a date that would commemorate say S R Ranganathan (9 August), which
would also have made it possible to rally the message more effectively
within librarian networks.

I recently met a librarian who was attending WikiCite 2018 but had no idea
of the Wikimedia related activities in India. I think no attempt has been
made here to reach out into rather disjoint networks, it needs far more
participation, a much-larger organising "team" and a broader scope to be
effective or useful. A meeting of a few Wikipedians would certainly be fun,
and relatively cheap to organize but unlikely to be particularly useful in
the long run. As far as I have seen, other than User:Gazal World and
perhaps a couple of other Indians, there is no activity on the en:resource
exchange and I do not know if such fora exist on other language wikipedias.
I know that there are several Indian/Indic Wikipedians with access to JSTOR
and other resources via TWL but I do not think there has not even been a
survey of whether the grantees have made use of those resources.

best wishes

Hi Dhaval,
We are in a conversation with a few institutions, where academics,
librarians and any other related personnel can take part in some
discussions. We will be finalising it by the end of this week, definitely
before notifying the participants.
Yes, applications will close today. We haven't fixed the event dates only
to suit the venue, but to avoid clashes with Hindi WP conference, we fixed
on 4-6 Jan. I made the change

The whole planning seems to be half cooked, e.g. on the conference
Venue & City: We're currently searching, let us know know if you have any
good options; economical (free; library preferred), safe, well connected,
easy of connecting with local library/librarian community.
And are we closing applications today? Should we not have a confirmed
venue to begin with? Day before yesterday when I checked the page, even
dates weren't confirm and there were couple of options projected there.

I have noted on the talk page that this "event" appears to have been
set up without much discussion. I would indeed even question the design of
an event that precludes librarians who are outside the Wikimedia movement
simply by requiring that one has a Wikimedia user name. Maybe Krishna can
help some of us understand the process by which this event has been thought

Hi Shyamal,

Firstly I am sorry to all about the event. I was not regular in updating
that, so everything remained the way when I first created (basically from
my sandox). It needs to be updated, I'll do that shorty. I've also replied
to your talk page message, which I believe will answer your question from
the immediate previous email, atleast to some extent.

I'll glad to continue the discussion there, so that it'll help to make it a
better event. If there is anyone who would like to add to the program or
discussion, please comment on the event talk page.

Thanks,
Krishna
