Discussion:
[Wikimediaindia-l] India community mailing list admins

Dear all,

The Indian community mailing list is arguably the most used mailing list by
the Indian Wikimedia community. However, recently some users have reported
problems with subscription and sending messages as non-subscribers. All
these issues are need to be dealt by the list admins at the earliest
possible. However, the issues remain unsolved.

So I think more active community members must be added as mailing list
admins so that these issues can be addressed in a timely manner.

List info at: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/Wikimediaindia-l

Looking forward for comments from other members.

I agree with Krishna on this. Let's add some more list admins.

I would prefer the new admin selectec to not have any connection with
WMIN/CIS/WMF... For him to remain as neutral as possible (personal
opinion)...

I am okay with this. If Shyamal and AshLin agrees, they two can be good due
to their standing in the community.

This is a good suggestion Satdeep. In addition to this, I would also like
to nominate User: Naveenpf and either User :Atudu or User :Manavpreet Kaur.

A suggestion is to have a female admin.

I agree Krishna,

At the same time, let us review the non-active admins as well, or any admin
who wants to step down.

I so want to step down from the Delhi list if we are discussing about that as well. :)

It’s been 5 years since I left Delhi and it makes sense for someone local to take over. For the record, I also lost the password and probably Theo needs to add the new moderator.

Happy to add anyone interested for Bangalore.

Nice initiative Subha,

For the other suggestions that are floating in, I would recommend not to
suggest/nominate third parties. Let individuals nominate themselves for it
to be more productive adminship.

A need of gender balance could be there but list adminship simply doesn't
require it, so instead of forcibly implimenting it for the sake of
political correctness, let us invite all genders, male/female/third
gender/gender neutral, all.

Dhaval Sudhanva Vyas

Hey Subha,

Delhi mailing list is dead for a very long time. Every time I request Theo
to approve the mails but I receive no response.

Anyways, the issue here is regional mailing list also need moderators.

If I can float a suggestion - We should revamp all mailing list that
require attention at the moment.

I don't see any mails from you in my inbox. There was just a single email
held on the Delhi list. From Abhinav.

I explained to Yohann and Subha more than a few times. The mails keep
getting held up because the senders aren't member of the list. Please join
the list first.

Dear all,

I am one of the list admins of the India list and have been rather inactive for sometime now. If there is an effort at getting new admins, I am happy to step down.

I agree with Yohann and Dhaval's suggestion, and also the nominations.

Yes, as Abhinav mentioned, this problem of inactive list admins/moderators
exists on many of Indian regional mailing lists as well. I've faced issues
in the past while posting to some Indic-language mailing lists. So we can
actually start a common conversation (may be on Meta-Wiki), listing all the
Indic-communities' mailing lists along with the admins/moderators
(active/inactive). Following that interested (& active) users can volunteer
themselves to be admins.

Best,
Krishna

A discussion on Meta would be better. We all have to be a bit careful with the wording as some might feel bad if their names are called publicly for their inactivity.

Those who are interested to take the moderator role should ideally self-nominate and others can up/downvote and share views just like the same way admins are selected.

Many of the Indian-language Wikimedians might not participate as they would otherwise be discussing internally. So, including the India list, local city-based lists would probably be a good idea.

Hello,

Please you let me know who reported problems with subscription? Also, the
mailing list rule is that non-subscribers cannot post. Posters have to
subscribe to the list to send their message to the rest of the subscribers.
The occasional mail that gets caught in the filter is cleared on a weekly
basis.

If you are interested in signing up as a moderator, please feel free to
send an email to wikimediaindia-l-***@wikimedia.org.

Thanks,
Anirudh

Hi,

Recently, there was a major subscription attack to all the mailing lists.
Email ids from aol and yahoo were used to subscribe in bulk. Probably,
during the corrective measures, this kind of problem might have occurred.

In case of any posting issues, raising them to the list admins usually
solves them quickly.

Regards
-Sudhanwa

(If there's any list the community would like to revive or add moderators
to, but encounters lost passwords or unresponsive admins, please document
that on Meta as well and draw my attention to it, after reaching some
agreement. I can ask WMF Operations team members to regain control of the
list and add the moderators.)
